Modern World vs Old World Solutions
When it comes to saddles and seat posts, you have two choices:
- Modern World: Vinyl, padded saddle and something like a Cane Creek Thudbuster (this is the setup Jennifer is running on her Fargo and she finds it very comfortable).
- Old World: Like a Brooks B67 (a sprung leather saddle that has been in production for over 100 years. This is the route I have chosen…I seem to be attracted to traditional solutions).
Sometimes we get the chance to be a part of the tradition or heritage of cycling in the modern world.
A Brooks leather saddle is a huge part of this tradition and heritage. Brooks began making leather cycling saddles in 1866. The saddles are old fashion, real leather and not necessarily light. The are authentic, beautiful, practical and very comfortable. At least that’s what many claim. I’ll provide a follow-up review after several hundred miles on the saddle and give you my honest feedback. For now, let’s just enjoy the beauty of this traditional leather saddle.
I love the look of this saddle on my Surly Ogre. It definitely looks the part of a world traveler’s machine (even if I just ride it to the grocery store).
Sometimes the old stuff, simple stuff, actually works better than the new, fancy stuff. We’ll see.
Good job Brent . .have two Brooks saddles myself . . one on my (your old) road bike . . the Rubeix.
Always look forward to your blogs . . keep up the great photography !
Thanks Doug,
Glad to hear your getting along on Brooks saddles and happy to hear you’re enjoying my former road bike. Thanks for the compliments.
